Swissloop Tunneling

We are the official ETH student team working on next-generation micro tunnel boring machines (MTBMs). Founded in late 2020, we’ve grown into a team of over 100 active members and alumni, bringing together students from more than 12 countries and a wide range of engineering and business disciplines. Whether you’re into mechanical design, electronics, software, project management, finance, design, or communications—there’s a place for you on the team.
Yearly to Biennial Competitions
So far, Swissloop Tunneling has competed in three editions of the Not-a-Boring Competition, won once, placed second twice, and brought home three awards. We intend to continue participating in such international competitions abroad, whilst working on our first self-hosted competition in Europe in the future.
Real Impact
We’re working on developing real-world tunneling technology that could transform how cities build infrastructure—faster, cleaner, and with minimal disruption. Our tunneling systems can help reduce road and open urban area closures and pursue utility projects with minimal surface impact. The primary use case for such a technology is the deployment of water, gas, and electrical pipelines.
Frequently asked questions
Why should I join a project?
For most, the main motivation for joining such a project is to obtain hands-on experience in a dynamic and cutting-edge field like rocketry or the Hyperloop concept. Additionally, you can enhance your skill set, get to meet leaders in academia & industry, and become an expert in your field.
Can I earn ECTS credits by joining a project?
Most students join projects as “freelance” members, i.e., simply do it for their own benefit of learning new skills, getting hands-on experience by applying their knowledge to a problem, or improving their CV to have better chances of getting an internship position.
On the other hand, Focus Projects students earn 20 ECTS credits for their one-year-long full-time commitment, developing cutting-edge technology in various fields.
Finally, you can also earn ECTS credits by conducting a thesis at one of the initiatives.
What will be the expected weekly workload?
Depending on the chosen initiative and position, your weekly workload can vary quite drastically. Usually, open positions indicate the expected workload. General business or engineering positions can range from 4 hours to 2 days per week, whereas leadership positions can require more time.
Do I get paid by working in a project?
No, all participating projects at ETH Zurich Initiatives offer only unpaid positions. However, as an exchange for your efforts, you get to work in a dynamic, cutting-edge field, network with leaders in academia & industry, apply your knowledge hands-on, and enhance your chances at a future job or internship by improving your CV.
